Prayer: May the words of my mouth and meditation of my heart be acceptable, O Lord, my Strength and my Redeemer. Amen
Some faces say "welcome" and others say "GRRRR - BEWARE OF THE DOG!" Ever noticed?
Faces are important. We learn even as children . . don't ask Mom right now . . she is NOT in a good mood . . or . . yes, now would be a good time to ask Dad . .
Madison Avenue uses baby faces, children faces and puppy faces!
On TV, one of my favorite faces is on the news when a soldier comes home on leave . . Dad or Mom . . to surprise a child in their school . . there is pure JOY at that reunion.
The most difficult and solemn face for me to see is again . a soldier . . captured. His eyes . . show fear and anguish and we cringe at the words they are forced to say.
Sometimes TV shows a person being interviewed or examined in a court room. Try turning off the sound and just watch their face . . see what difference that makes.
Who has the most important face? Not a celebrity who won an Oscar . . not a sports hero . .
not even the Pope or the leader of ANY country.
The most important face is God!
GOD HAS A FACE? He does! Listen to the conversation between God and Moses in
Exodus 33:12-23. They have been talking . . the Lord told Moses to take the Israelites to the Promised Land but not who will go with him. Moses wants to know who is going with him. And the LORD replied, "I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest." Moses keeps talking and ends with this: "Then show me your glorious presence!" Oh, my goodness! Did he know what he was asking? Would any of us have been brave enough to ask that of the LORD?
The LORD replied "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out My name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.
"But you may not look directly at My face, for no one may see Me and live.
WHAT does God's face look like? What do you think?
Jesus was talking with His disciples in John 14:8-9 and said to Philip, "Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father."
Hebrews 1:3 says this of Jesus: "The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and He sustains everything by the mighty power of His command. When He had cleansed us from our sins, He sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
Jesus did not have a halo around His head. His face must have said 'welcome' because parents brought their children to Him to see Him. He must have looked similar to His disciples since Judas needed to kiss Him in the garden to identify Him for the soldiers to arrest and take Him away.
Matthew 19:13-15 One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so He could lay His hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering Him.
But Jesus said "HEY! OI! (not really). "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children. And He placed His hands on their heads and blessed them before He left.
Crowds followed Him just to hear Him preach. What about those He healed? Those He brought back from the dead? and their loved ones? What did they think about the face of Jesus?
If we could ask Mary Magdalene what she thought . . would she say? . . I looked into His face and I became a pure woman.
If we could ask Matthew the Tax Collector what he thought . . would he say? . . I looked into His face and I became an honest man.
Then there were the faces of the Pharisees and Sadducees . . the teachers of the law. Their faces looked like 'GRRRR!!' Beware of the Dog!" because they hated Jesus . . were jealous of Him . . made plans to kill Him . . an ugly death . . on the Cross.
Matthew 26:66-68 When Jesus was before the Council at the home of Caiaphas, the high priest. also present were teachers of the religious law and elders. When they finished questioning Him, they shouted, " Guilty! He deserves to die!" Then they began to spit in Jesus' FACE and beat Him with their fists. And some slapped Him, jeering, "Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?"
This was prophesied by Isaiah in the Old Testament. Isaiah 52:14. "But many were amazed when they saw Him. His face was so disfigured He seemed hardly human, and from His appearance, one would scarcely know He was a man."
We could say . . on the cross . . the sun in the sky his its FACE.
We could say . . on the cross . . His Father in Heaven hid His FACE temporarily.
Jesus, our Savior, . . in the end we will see His face . . we will see Him face to face.
1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
When all is said and done, His is the ONLY face that matters.
Do you know what I'm talking about?
Do you understand what I'm saying?
If only I could see your face . . .
Blessing: The LORD bless thee, and keep thee / the LORD make His FACE shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee / the LORD lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. Amen
