GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME : why didn't they sing?
So why didn't they sing?
It was the first song of the church service.
It was the first time they had been back to church after a death in the family.
It was the first time I 'picked up' on their anger.
It was the first time they did not sing (that I noticed).
It was the first time I questioned myself about my song choice. What in the world?
I tried to think back to my own times of grief when I was in a church service. Would I have been mad about that particular song? What I called to mind was being unable to stop crying. It didn't matter about the songs or the message at that time. What I desperately needed was to talk to God. The result was the fact that God was Sovereign went from my head down to include my heart. Sovereign means God was / is / will be in charge.
There are times you believe you have grasped a truth but then you REALLY grasp a truth. I now knew for sure . . that God was Sovereign. That was something good. When you learn a truth about God, not just in your head, but in your heart, your body relaxes. It's like . . oh, I understand now the truth and that helped. It helped a lot. The tension diminished.
If I could go back to that Sunday morning, I would still play God is Good All the time. I would change the message though. I would tell them what I have just said in the above paragraph. I would tell them sometimes people get life and God mixed up. Life is not only not easy, it can be pretty miserable. Life can be rude and evil and ugly.
But God is not. He cannot be because He is good.
God did not kill their loved one . . an illness did.
God does not cause car accidents . . inattention / exhausted drivers / alcohol / drugs, etc.
cause car accidents
God is not cruel . . . but life can be.
God does not abandon us, but "loved ones" can and do.
Why? God gave us free will. We all choose how we live. The result is men / women / children choose to hurt each other. And sometimes we do it unknowingly.
Let's think about this. If we did not have free will, we would be like robots. Or when we reached out to touch something or someone we should not touch, maybe our hand or arm would be paralyzed or we would be killed like the man in the Old Testament (2 Samuel 6:7 whose name was Uzzah) reached out to keep the Ark of the Covenant from falling when the oxen stumbled. What if every time a person looked at porn, they would go blind? God gave us free will. He wants us to freely love Him!
Listen to 1 John 1:5. This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you:
God is light, in him there is no darkness at all. (GOD HAS NO DARK SIDE.)
1 John 4:7. Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.
1John 4:16. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.
1 John 4:19. We love because He first loved us.
Am I saying that I have never been mad at God? Heavenly days, no! Am I always at peace? Ask my husband . . he could tell you that I am not. The Lord knows me for sure.
When Jerry and I were in Virginia, we took a bus trip and saw the Holocaust Museum. The pictures and memories they left behind were graphic and made me want to bolt out the door. But I didn't. I couldn't. It was not God who forced Jews to death camps, it was men. It was not God who lied to the people about the incinerators being showers, it was men.
Here is something that helps me. I say it to myself periodically during every day:
THUS FAR THE LORD HAS HELPED ME!
This is based on the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel. Chapter 7 tells about a battle between Israel and the Philistines. The Lord helped the Israelites by routing the enemy into a panic with loud thunder. Samuel the prophet took a stone and set it up and called it Ebenezer. Samuel said "Thus far has the LORD helped us".
I change it to 'helped me' as shown above to make it more personal.
I am going to stop now. I am repeating the truth in different ways.
How about you? Do you ever get life and God mixed up?
