Today's post is about 2 men who wanted to follow Jesus. See what you think . . .

The Scripture is Matthew 8:16-32 - The cost of following Jesus (New Living Translation).

When Jesus noticed how large the crowd was growing, he instructed his disciples to cross to the other side of the lake. Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you no matter where you go!"

But Jesus said, "Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but I, the Son of Man, have no home of my own, not even a place to lay my head."

Another of his disciples said, "Lord, first let me return home and bury my father."

But Jesus told him, "Follow Me now! Let those who are spiritually dead care for their own dead."

The first man, a scribe made quite a remarkable offer. Especially when you consider the class to which he belonged. But Jesus also spoke a remarkable answer. He neither accepted nor rejected the offer.

The second man came forward and asked to be allowed to bury his Father prior to following Jesus. That request drew a solemn reply to the man: "Follow Me now! Let the spiritually dead care for their own dead." Some scholars understood this interaction to mean the man's father was currently alive and well. It was important in that culture for a man to bury his family.

Other scholars say Jesus was teaching the men to "count the cost" before they began to follow. Were they ready? Did they follow?

How about you? Are you following Jesus? If not, who are you following?
