Scripture is in red because it is the words of Jesus:
You have heard that it was said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY";
but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.
Wow! Really? Barclay* states Jesus is NOT making a surgical demand. He is using hyperbole . . but people have actually maimed themselves. Instead He is calling for ruthless moral denial. (I realize the doctrine of sin is not popular so it is denied and avoided.)
The picture above is not the line walker I am referring to. Neither is it the movie by the same name, nor a worker on a petroleum line.
This line walker thinks he/she can get as close to a sin as possible and yet has not actually sinned. Today's scripture was Jesus explaining that the Pharisee's did not have an understanding of this commandment. They thought if they just did not commit the actual act, they were home safe. Jesus was saying, no, you're out!
A heart can still be wicked even if other body parts are not involved.
The answer of course is Jesus. We must be born again, give Him your heart, or ask Him into your heart, however you want to phrase it. Here is one stanza from a hymn There is a Green Hill Far Away.
There was no other good enough
To pay the price of sin
He only, could unlock the gate
Of heaven, and let us in.
