Jesus heals 2 blind men.

Scripture: Power over darkness Matthew 9:27-31

After Jesus left the girl's home (Jairus's daughter), two blind men followed along behind him, shouting, "Son of David, have mercy on us!"

They went right into the house where He was staying, and Jesus asked them,

"Do you believe I can make you see?" "Yes, Lord", they told him, "we do."

Then He touched their eyes and said, "Because of your faith, it will happen."

And suddenly they could see! Jesus sternly warned them,

"Don't tell anyone about this." But instead they spread His fame all over the region.

William Barclay in The Daily Study Bible, states "Blindness was a distressingly common disease in Palestine. It came partly from the glare of the eastern sun on unprotected eyes, and partly because people knew nothing of the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. In particular the swarms and clouds of unclean flies carried the infections which led to loss of sight."

I also read the eyes were often repulsive. They sometimes looked like leprosy. To the men it would feel itchy and painful. They were dependent upon others to meet their needs because they were unable to work. There were no signs in braille and no guide dogs. There was no protection from abuse.

These two had each other and somehow they made it to where Jesus was staying.

Had they overheard the crowd talking about all the healing Jesus had done that very day? Did they know the promise from the prophet Isaiah about the Messiah? Is that why they called out "Son of David" (Matthew 1:1)?

Then once inside the house, silence. The other people who had followed Jesus took one look at those eyes and moved back. The two blind men could not see Jesus but they were thinking He must be right there.

Then they heard the most wonderful voice you could ever hear and it was close to them. His is a gentle voice but with authority. Jesus asked them one question.

"Do you believe I can make you see?"

And there they are . . the 2 of them breathless from running and the poorest of the poor. In unison they answer, "Yes, Lord, we do." (They not only said 'yes', but called Him Lord! By calling Him Lord, they were saying they knew it was all up to Him.) Then they were startled at first, because He touched their eyes . . their repulsive looking eyes . . but found His touch was gentle.

And that wonderful voice said, "Because of your faith, it will happen."

And suddenly, they could see! What made that happen? Their faith!

What miracle do you need? What miracle do I need?

Without getting personal, I feel safe in saying that 100% of us in this year of 2022 need relief from some degree of anxiety. Would you agree with that?

Is the reason for our anxiety the state the world is in today? Is the reason Covid / politics / inflation, etc.? Or is the problem our own lack of faith in Jesus?

I can hear someone say, Joyce, you don't know what I am going through! How can you say that? No, I don't know what each of you are going through.

But I am saying it to myself also. Why am I anxious when I know I belong to Him?

I can listen to or sing the old hymn "Trust and Obey". I can keep praying. I can journal my feelings which helps, but the Word is not based on feelings. The Word is Truth! I can bury myself in truth!

Would you agree that this scripture teaches us that it was their faith that allowed them to be healed? It is a very practical lesson for us to learn.

There is a story and verse we can relate to in Mark 9:14 - 29. In the middle of the story, the father states, "I do believe, help my unbelief."

Here's the bottom line: How much faith do you have in Jesus today? How much faith do I have in Jesus today?

Father, I pray that You will increase our faith today in the Lord Jesus. Give each of us a timely scripture that will open our eyes and let us see Him. Holy Spirit, give us that Blessed Assurance that we are Yours and You are with us forever. It is in the sweet Name of Jesus that we are asking. Thank you, Father. Amen
